New Guide

I designed this guide for a friend of mine.

It’s in Word Document form, but I’ll post it here.  SSBB Hacking

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Hacking

By xSpartanLazerx of Galaxia Darkness

Hello, and welcome to the world of Pokémon SSBB Hacking!  This is a special guide for all who wish to know how to hack and the benefits of it.  Please read the paper, though >_>

What is Smash Hacking?

Hacking is a term for making software or hardware do things they normally couldn’t/shouldn’t do.  Smash Hacking is hacking any one of the three Smash Bros. installments.  Super Smash Bros. Brawl, by far, is the most convenient to hack, and the most fun.  SSBB Hacking consists of many types.  First is texture hacking, or making a character model’s ‘skin’ different-looking (e.g. Making Ganondorf look like Billy Mays).

Model Hacking has two genres, Vertex and Replacement.  Vertex hacking consists of rearranging the points of a character model to make a different appearance.  Model Replacement is taking the model from another game and replacing a character model with it.

Next is Music Hacking.  .brstm’s are the files that SSBB play for music.  They are usually termed A01 or some other letter-and-digit name.  Music Hacking is replacing a standard .brstm file with a custom music file of their own.  So, instead of hearing Underwater theme in Mushroomy Kingdom 1-2, you can listen to Michael Jackson’s Beat It.

How can I Texture Hack?

Good question, but first, let me tell you what is a texture.  A texture is an image meant for covering a model.  In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, these images are encoded into a .pac file.  A .pac holds some character animations, the character’s model, and its textures.

-A picture is worth a thousand words…

Those TEX0 files are textures!  In Brawlbox, a program meant just for hacking Brawl, can export these weird files into something we can edit, say…a .jpg or .png image.  Below is Mario’s eye.

This is Mario’s iris.  This picture is mirrored and used for BOTH eyes.  A yellow version of his eye covers this one if he grabs a Smash Ball.  But if I change this eye to green…

…It’ll show up as this under his eye lids in Brawl!

One last point, the images MUST be edited to take effect!  They need to be edited in a picture editor such as the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), Paint.net, or Photoshop.  I personally use GIMP, since I don’t need to index images (set a limit on colors) for BrawlBox.

How can I Model Hack?!

Ah..!  I do not know, exactly.  I’ve never before done this.  However, in a 3D model program such as 3D Studio Max 2010 or Blender, you can edit the vertices to vertex hack a model into another form.

From Sonic…

…to Shadow the Hedgehog! (Credit to mastaklo for vertex hack)

I’m just gonna be lazy, soooooooo… CTRL+CLICK HERE

In Conclusion…

…and that’s how I got that scar on my…a, wait, what?  Oh yeah, there are many, many things that fit into different categories in SSBB hacking, you’ll find it all out at the KC:MM forums.  KC:MM stands for Kitty Corp: Meow Mix forums.  These forums are the result of the combination of Kitty Corp and Meow Mix texture hacking teams.  I even have my own team!  Just click Galaxia Darkness at the top of this Word document.  KC:MM is located HERE.

Make yourself at home, here.  The only member that really tries to bite people is Vyse (if you act stupid >=U).
